Springfield, IL …State Representative Michael McAuliffe (R-Chicago) along with his Republican colleagues introduced new protections to safeguard victims of domestic violence following the murder in Elmhurst of Cindy Bischof. House Republicans are pushing for global positioning satellite (GPS) tracking of offenders who violate orders of protection.
“What happened to Cindy Bischof is just tragic. She did everything the law allows. She took out an order of protection and moved from place-to-place but her stalker ignored the orders and in the end found her and took her life,” McAuliffe said.
Michael Bischof, the victim’s brother, worked with the House Republicans on crafting the legislation to better protect victims of domestic violence.
“On behalf of Cindy, my family applauds lawmakers for recognizing short-comings in the law with respect to protecting victims of domestic violence and for working with us to take quick action to bring about change,” said Michael Bischof of Barrington Hills. “My family has received a tremendous amount of support from people who knew Cindy and those who did not know her. In memory of my sister, we established a website, Cindysmemorial.org where other women have begun to share their stories with us. It is upsetting to read stories from other women who are currently facing similar struggles – that is what is driving us today.”
House Republicans have introduced legislation that will allow electronic surveillance for violators of an order of protection. House Bill 6325 co-sponsored by Rep. McAuliffe creates the Cindy Bischof Domestic Violence Electronic Surveillance Law.
